Well, what a year it's has been, here at VF HQ we have baked for weddings, birthdays, food festivals, garden parties, cake fairs, kitchen showroom demonstrations, a cookery school video and finally now preparations for Christmas, including a Champagne masterclass at The Dorchester Hotel.

Well, the Cake Show in Orlando certainly didn’t disappoint. In fact it more than lived up to my expectations. A visual feast of absolutely amazing cake creations, including a truly spectacular edible fashion show.

Coffee and Cake

Coffee and Cake

A match made in heaven. A freshly brewed coffee and a delicious slice of cake. Is there anything better? Especially when a good cause benefits too. So why not join me for a very special Coffee Morning at Velvet Fig HQ on Monday 9th October (10am – 4pm).

School's in!

School's in!

September already? How did that happen?! I hope you’ve all had a good Summer and the children have enjoyed their break from school. My girls certainly have!

The start of a new school year always feels like a big milestone, but once the shock of the first few days are over and everyone is settled back in to the old routine, it’s great to have exciting things to look forward to (such as Christmas!!). I know, I know – you can’t bear to think about the festivities just yet – but it’s only 15 weeks away, I’ve been baking Christmas Cakes throughout the summer and I even know someone who has started their Christmas shopping! I’ve received my first Christmas order already too. Some people are just super-organised.

Before we get too carried away with talk of mistletoe and mulled wine, I’ve got some really interesting projects coming up over the Autumn – and a very exciting development here at Velvet Fig HQ that I can’t wait to unveil next month. Watch this space!

In the meantime, as well as making 2 beautiful wedding cakes, I am taking part in 2 events this month. The first event is the Food Festival at G-Live in Guildford this Sunday (11am – 4pm, 10th Sept). It’s a celebration of fine food and drink, organised by Local Food Britain.

If you’re in the area or fancy popping over to Guildford (perfect chance to combine the food festival with a bit of retail therapy), please come and say “Hello”. We’ll have our fabulous Cake Sundaes, Gin Cake Sundaes, Cupcakes and Mini Loaf Cakes for sale – why not come and treat yourself and your family?

On Saturday 16th September we’re at the Big Field in Brockham for Dorking Rugby Club’s Ladies Day. If you are there for the Ladies Day Lunch or come down to watch the rugby in the afternoon, you’ll be able to buy some of our delicious cakes and gin sundaes – plus there’s live music from Ecletix after the rugby – a great excuse to make an afternoon or evening of it! More details here…http://www.dorkingrfc.com.

Good luck to everyone getting back in to the swing of school and work. Don’t worry, it will soon be half-term…

Love Emma

A Slice of Sunshine

A Slice of Sunshine

A picnic on a lazy Summer’s day is my idea of heaven. But things are pretty hectic here at VelvetFig HQ and I’ve got some exciting projects to work through before I can hang up my apron and relax!

Sundae Special

Sundae Special

Gin’s quite a thing at the moment isn’t it? I’ve even spotted it in the dessert cabinet in Waitrose in the guise of Heston’s Earl Grey and Lemon Gin & Tonic Tart. According to various news reports, we’ve become a nation of gin lovers. In fact, last year us Brits spent more on gin than we did on beer and sparkling wine.

Blooming Marvellous

Blooming Marvellous

I’m loving the beautiful colours of Spring. Wherever I look flowers seem to be springing up and there’s blossom everywhere. Gorgeous.

It’s also the start of the festival season......

Yippee, it finally feels like Spring.

Yippee, it finally feels like Spring.

Hopefully, breakfast in bed made up for losing an hour’s sleep when the clocks went forward on Mother’s Day? Still, at least we have the lighter evenings to enjoy now. I love this time of year – the change of seasons, brighter mornings and longer evenings make me feel energised and put a spring in my step!

Having my cake and eating it!

Having my cake and eating it!

My life as a cake specialist has many different layers! I bake lots of delicious cakes for lots of different occasions. I do cake demos. I teach baking and decorating skills. I visit cake shows. I enjoy “speaking cake”.

Love is in the air!

I know some people might feel shelves packed with heart-shaped bits and pieces is all a bit too over-commercialised, but (romantic that I am!) I love Valentine’s Day
